Parameter Estimation

Introduction

Parameter estimation is another important method to extract system parameters from the input-/output-behavior of the process.

A mathematical model is run in parallel to the process. The error between the model output and the process output is supplied to an estimator, which adjusts the model parameters so that the error between process and model becomes as small as possible.

In case of a fault, process parameters will change. Thus the error between the model output and the process output will no longer be minimal. The estimator will adjust the model parameters so that they again match the process parameters.

The existence of a fault will thus manifest itself in a change of the parameter estimates.
